the handmaid’s tale
„the handmaid‘s tale“ is a dystopian classic, written in 1985 by Margarete Atwood and set in the future of our following century (although sadly it is quite a perfidious description of exactly what is happening in our world right now). The novel centers around a society in which the opressive regime controls women, their identities and social life.
The first person narrator Offred tells the story of one of many women who are robbed their bodies and free will and are slaves to the society and its rules.
unfortunately the author didn’t have to come up with all the brutal ideas herself, every aspect of misogyny was taken from history or can still be found in todays world, which made the „dystopia“ as dark as it felt.
although it took me some time to get through the rather slow-paced story, i was completely absorbed into this dark reality.
i really enjoyed atwood‘s writing and found her worldbuilding and all of the descriptions so subtle and yet so powerful.
I am going to watch the series now and recommend reading the handmaid‘s tale to everyone who hasn‘t already!!
